A Puyallup mailing address does not always mean a City of Puyallup permit. Here is how to tell, and what tends to need one.

The quick answer

Your Puyallup bathroom remodel may need a permit if it involves moving plumbing, changing electrical or altering walls. Which office issues it depends on where your property actually sits, which is not always what the mailing address says. When a permit is required, White Saber takes care of it.

Who handles your address

Four possible permit offices.

City of Puyallup

Addresses inside city limits go through the City of Puyallup permit center, which handles building permits and inspections.

Unincorporated South Hill

Large parts of South Hill are outside city limits despite a Puyallup mailing address. Those properties go through Pierce County Planning & Public Works.

Edgewood

Edgewood is its own city on the plateau to the north, with its own permit process.

Sumner and others nearby

Neighboring cities each run their own permitting. Check your jurisdiction before assuming.

How to tell which one you are in

The quickest check is the Pierce County parcel lookup, which shows whether a parcel is inside a city. Your property tax statement is another clue. We can help confirm during the walkthrough.

Work that often involves a permit

  • Relocating a toilet, shower or vanity drain
  • Adding circuits, outlets or a new fan circuit
  • Removing or moving walls
  • Running new exhaust ducting outside

Work that often does not

Replacing tile, a vanity or a faucet in the same location is generally lighter. Generally is not a guarantee, so we confirm with the right office before work starts.

Older homes near downtown

In pre-1978 houses, lead paint is a possibility, and some older vinyl sheet flooring and its glue may hold asbestos. EPA lead rules and regional clean air agency asbestos survey requirements can both come into play, so on older valley homes we bring them up at the first visit.

Our part

We point out anything in your plan that likely needs a permit, prepare and submit the application when needed, and schedule inspections into the timeline.

Questions

Permit Q&A for Puyallup.

Does a South Hill address mean I use the City of Puyallup?

Not necessarily. Many South Hill parcels are in unincorporated Pierce County. Check the parcel before applying.

How long do permits take?

It depends on the office and the type of work. We plan the schedule around it.

Will my HOA need to approve it?

Interior work rarely needs HOA approval, but check your rules for exterior changes like vent caps.
